The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, is considered to be a major threat to the US citrus industry since it is an efficient vector of the pathogen that produces citrus greening disease. Photograph courtesy of Michael Rogers/University of Florida.

FAMILY ALEYRODIDAE—WHITEFLIES

Whiteflies are small insects, typically about 2–3 mm in size, with adults that possess wings covered with whitish powdery wax. They are most abundant in the subtropics and tropics since few whitefly species can survive areas where freezing temperatures periodically kill their host plants. (In the northern half of the United States and Canada, the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, is the overwhelmingly most abundant whitefly species. In those areas, all outdoor infestations annually originate from infested plants maintained indoors in greenhouses during winter.)
